OUR HERITAGE, SHAPING LEDBURY’S FUTURE

PROTECTING OUR HERITAGE, SHAPING THE FUTURE

28 FEBRUARY 2025 – MEETING

Conservation and Restoration of Medieval Church Chests.

By Rachel Sycamore BA (Hons.) MRes.

Chests were very important forms of medieval furniture, many still extant in churches today. They were heavy immovable objects intended to keep their contents dry and secure from thieves and vermin.

Rachel Sycamore, a local furniture restorer and conservator, and Furniture Advisor to the Hereford Diocese, has recorded and conserved many church chests in Herefordshire and the surrounding counties. Her talk provides an insight into what church chests were used for, the different types of church chest, how many survive in Herefordshire and what they meant to people in medieval society. She also discusses examples of important church chests local to Ledbury.

Our Meetings

Meetings are held in Burgage Hall, usually on the last Friday of the month. They start at 7.30pm, unless otherwise stated.

We recommend arriving around 10 – 15 minutes beforehand so you have time to settle in and the meeting can start on time.

Open to members and non-members. Free for members, £5.00 for non-members. There is no need to book in advance unless otherwise stated.

Burgage Hall is accessed from Church Lane and down the path beside Butcher Row House Museum.  Alternatively take Chapel Alley (next to the newsagents) off the High Street and enter through the double doors.

The Society organises about eight meetings each year.
