OUR HERITAGE, SHAPING LEDBURY’S FUTURE

PROTECTING OUR HERITAGE, SHAPING THE FUTURE

16 MAY 2025 – MEETING

a HISTORY OF VINE HOUSE AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW STREET

By Wendy Hill, MA

Vine House, very close to the historical heart of Ledbury, was built in the 1750s.  When Wendy and Bernard Hill moved there in August 2016 – on the hottest day of the year! – they started to uncover its many previous incarnations, including school and ale house, and much else in between.  Because of this interesting insight, they felt it deserved more in-depth professional research – and so developed the project that Wendy will share with us.

This is an additional talk for Ledbury Civic Society, arranged as part of the first Herefordshire Histories Festival.  Throughout the County, events are being organised to celebrate the extraordinary history of Herefordshire.  Further details of the Festival and a full programme of events may be found at HEREFORDSHIRE HISTORIES FESTIVAL MAY 2025.

Our Meetings

Meetings are held in Burgage Hall, usually on the last Friday of the month. They start at 7.30pm, unless otherwise stated.

We recommend arriving around 10 – 15 minutes beforehand so you have time to settle in and the meeting can start on time.

Open to members and non-members. Free for members, £5.00 for non-members. There is no need to book in advance unless otherwise stated.

Burgage Hall is accessed from Church Lane and down the path beside Butcher Row House Museum.  Alternatively take Chapel Alley (next to the newsagents) off the High Street and enter through the double doors.

The Society organises about eight meetings each year.
