The Victoria County History for LedburY.
By Louise Ryland-Epton.
The Victoria County History (VCH) was founded in 1899 as a national project to write the history of every county in England. From the earliest archaeological records to the present day, including information about topography, landscape and the built environment. The Herefordshire volume was produced in 1908.
The project to explore the county’s rich local history was revived in 1998 and recent VCH ‘Shorts’ have been published for the villages of Eastnor, Bosbury, Colwall and Cradley. In addition, there have been two paperback volumes on Ledbury as part of the ‘England’s Past for Everyone’ series.
Louise is about to begin work on the history of Ledbury and she will explain the background of VCH histories. She will speak about the expected content and direction of her research in Ledbury, set in the context of similar towns.
